Light is all around us. It changes with the time of day, the distinctive seasons, and our perspectives as we experience life. Light can be blinding or illuminating. It can glow softly or cast a harsh shadow. It can enlighten or mystify. Light is every glassworker’s most significant collaborator. We invite you to experience the many Seasons of Light through this dynamic exhibition from the Saskatoon Glassworkers’ Guild, featuring a special group project.

This exhibition runs March 16 to May 4, 2024 at the Saskatchewan Craft Council.

Opening Reception is Friday, March 22 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. - Artists will be in attendance for this event.

The Métis Ribbon Skirt exhibition, co-organized by the Gabriel Dumont Institute and the Saskatchewan Craft Council, celebrates Métis history while embracing the cultural traditions of women who continue to make and wear contemporary-style ribbon skirts. Ribbon skirts have become a symbol of cultural reclamation for Indigenous women, including Métis women, who wear ribbon skirts to honour their history and demonstrate cultural pride.

Hillary Johnstone: Yellow Canoe

November 14th, 2023, to January 6th, 2024

Yellow Canoe is a solo exhibition by textile artist Hilary Johnstone of La Ronge, SK. Johnstone’s textile works are thoughtfully crafted from sketches and compositions drawn by the artist while hiking and canoeing in Northern Saskatchewan. This exhibition depicts Johnstone’s experiences with nature, from observing the lace-like intricacies of moss to witnessing the chaos and renewal of a Boreal forest fire.

Multi-Artist Exhibition: Growth Rings

Growth Rings features four established, award-winning Saskatchewan woodworkers who specialize in furniture design and creation: Michael Hosaluk, Don Kondra, Arthur Perlett, and Jamie Russell. This exhibition features both current and early work from each artisan — showing the progression and evolution of their concepts, techniques, and design. The show will run from June 3 – August 26, 2023 at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery, 813 Broadway Ave, Saskatoon.

Sculptor and printmaker Paul Lapointe expresses his close personal relationship with the land in this introspective exhibition of assemblages and carved panels. Across the street at 818 Broadway Ave (formerly Foster’s Shoes), the Saskatchewan Craft Council is hosting a Pop-Up Gallery from September 9th to 26th as part of Art Now: Saskatchewan Fine Art Fair.

This showcase features work by artists from across Saskatchewan in a variety of art media, including woodworking, metal forging, jewellery, ceramics, photography, printmaking, painting, and textile works. The Saskatchewan Craft Council’s Art Now display will be available to view in person from Thursday, September 9th to Friday, September 26th, and online from September 16th to 26th.

Touch the Conversation by ceramic artist, Grace Han, uses competing elements of fragility and durability, scale, and interaction in order to foster an authentic conversation with her audience. The desire for this authentic conversation is born from Han’s experience of moving to Canada from South Korea and encountering language and cultural barriers – the process of making has become Han’s own language, which Han invites us to participate in. 

The artist would like to acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts in the creation of this work.

Dimensions is the Saskatchewan Craft Council’s biennial, open, juried, touring exhibition which encourages and rewards excellence in hand-crafted work.

Square Dance by Cathryn Miller is unified by a common material and the use of the square as a recurring design element; this exhibition explores both the encryption and the transmission of memories and messages. The works are textile-inspired, and paper is transformed through a variety of processes such as cutting, folding, printing, painting, or stitching.

From Scratch showcases over 20 SCC Juried Professional Craftspeople working in a variety of craft media. To make something “from scratch” is to make something from nothing, a critical component of craft. From Scratch will consider the wide variety and complexity of technique and intent that exists in our contemporary craft world. Making from scratch will always be valued; but in an increasingly complex world, what else can we make and how can we make it?

The Saskatchewan Craft Council is pleased to present “Alchemy” — a retrospective exhibition of the rarely seen prints by Nik Semenoff — at SCC Gallery from March 21-May 2, 2020. The Saskatoon printmaker Nik Semenoff’s artistic and educational legacy will be the focus of this retrospective exhibition curated by Stephanie Canning, Paul Constable, and Maia Stark. An advocate for health and safety with a high regard for science, Semenoff introduced eco-friendly and non-toxic processes to the printmaker’s studio.

Through innovation and experimentation, Semenoff refined and revolutionized the methodology and tools for higher quality printmaking – now a world standard.  Semenoff has been invited to share his ground-breaking techniques in university print departments all around the world, leaving a far reaching legacy of a new standard in printmaking. This important exhibition displays works from his rarely seen personal collection, as well as materials and descriptions of his educational contributions.

Saskatchewan Craft Council is pleased to present The Flower People, a solo exhibition by Melanie Monique Rose.

Melanie Monique Rose is a fibre and visual artist from Regina, Saskatchewan, Treaty 4 Territory. She attended the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, BC and majored in Fibre Arts. Since then, Rose has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally. The Flower People is an ongoing theme for Rose, derived from the name "The Flower Beadwork People," a name given to the Métis who are well known for their floral beadwork. Rose uses felting techniques on collected blankets to create a canvas; exploring her Métis identity alongside her Ukrainian heritage. Personal, cultural, and universal symbolism are woven into the fabric of Rose’s work with an emphasis on movement, colour, and narrative. Rose’s most recent works explore personal acts of Indigenous survivance and solidarity, which have made her look critically at how she tells her story as an active Indigenous presence and contemporary artist in the world today.

Melanie Monique Rose will speak at a special Reception and Artist Talk co-sponsored by Sâkêwêwak Artist Collective on Saturday, January 25th. The Artist Talk will run from 2 to 3 pm, and the Reception from 3 to 5 pm at the Saskatchewan Craft Council. Everyone is welcome!

Stone Notes is an exploration of the wild landscape legends of northern Saskatchewan by architectural stone mason and sculptor Robert Assié. Stone carved in bas-relief and full round, this collection of sculptures illustrates a journey with perspectives from both water and shore.

Saskatchewan Craft Council is pleased to present Aggregate — an exhibition of ceramic sculpture by New Brunswick artist Darren Emenau.

Emenau’s ceramics reflect the natural and industrial landscapes of New Brunswick. By experimenting with clay and glaze in unconventional ways, Emenau creates forms which simultaneously convey a contemporary and ageless feel. 

Emenau refers to himself as a ‘serial tinkerer,’ experimenting for 20 years with techniques and finishes. Using imported materials and local materials (such as locally dug clay, potash, silica, shale, and granite) in his process, Emenau’s works are remarkable for their saturated colour and lush textural surfaces.

Unpredictability matched with a technical and thoughtful process of making has led to numerous international awards. This is a ceramic exhibition not to be missed.

Reception and Artist Talk with Michael Flaherty: Saturday, July 13, 2 – 5 pm

Saskatchewan Craft Council is pleased to present Other Artifacts — an exhibition of fine craft from Newfoundland artists Michael Flaherty, Susan Furneaux, and Philippa Jones.

In this exhibition, Flaherty, Furneaux, and Jones create mythical worlds with fine craft techniques and materials.

Furneaux tells stories with hand-made dolls, inspired by natural history, folklore, and the Newfoundland landscape using natural dye and historic stitching techniques.

Flaherty, working primarily in ceramics, integrates geometric historical ceramic decoration with the functional element of bicycle tires. Like craft, bicycling is, for Flaherty, “rooted in self-sufficiency, ethical awareness, and resistance to the mainstream.”

As a multi-media fine craft artist, Jones’ diverse art practice combines printmaking, interactive installations, and pen and ink. Central to Jones’ work is the exploration of constructed realities and active myth making, seeking to celebrate inquisitiveness and imagination.

An exhibition exploring contemporary approaches to illustrative narratives on the ceramic surface, featuring work by emerging and established artists Carole Epp (SK), Lindsay Montgomery (ON), Japneet Kaur (ON), Brenda Watt (SK), Marney McDiarmid (ON), and Shaun Mallonga (BC).

Reception & Artist Talk: Thursday, August 30, 7 – 9 pm

This body of work by Saidye Bronfman Award winner Kye-Yeon Son strikes a fine aesthetic balance between Korean subtlety and North American expressionism. Vessels and brooches made from fine steel wire meticulously welded together create forms and volumes inspired by the Nova Scotia landscape. Movement through direction, space, volume, and texture is mastered in Son's work, both sculptural and wearable.

The Saskatchewan Craft Council is pleased to present “Curio” — an exhibition of works from the private collections of Saskatchewan art collectors who have experienced the exciting energy of the longstanding Emma International Collaboration Auctions!

Every two years, artists from across the globe come to Emma to share in an experience of raw creation and open possibility. Artists at various stages of their careers are challenged to step outside their usual art practice, to explore medium, technique and subject matter through hands-on collaboration and exciting creative exchange. The result is intriguing one-of-a-kind pieces created by artists who may otherwise never work together. The very best pieces are then presented for auction on-site and in Saskatoon.

The exhibition “Curio” is a window into both the compelling world of art collection, as well as a tribute to past Emma collaborations and the many voices who have contributed to art and culture in Saskatchewan. Works featured in this exhibition include woodworking, blacksmithing, jewellery making, ceramics, furniture, printmaking, glass casting, and many other techniques and media. “Curio” was curated by SCC Exhibitions and Education Coordinators Stephanie Canning and Maia Stark.

Collaboration artworks are a time capsule of the enduring energy of Emma. They represent decades of community and creativity, and hold within them stories of the relationships fostered at this valuable and unique artistic experience.

Claude Morin’s fondest memories of his maternal grandfather are of being together on the land, a farm on the outskirts of French settlement Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. Morin has vivid memories of meadow larks, considered a messenger by Morin’s Fransaskois ancestors. From these roots a love of nature grew to a love for science and then art. Morin’s medium of choice, clay, is due to the natural relationship between clay and the earth – the material comes from the earth and is changed through water, air, and fire, representing earth’s ancestral beginnings.

This exhibition tells the story of memories and current perspectives, as well as Morin’s desire to explore his own interconnection with nature. This spiritually focused exhibition is the result of Morin’s process towards making and relationships with others: rather than attempt to force the material to behave, Morin’s approach is to allow the contribution of changes, accidents, and natural expressions that occur. Morin states, “Gestures and accidents contribute to [the] composition. I must finally abandon the art to the caprices of fire. When the kiln is opened, the pieces slowly and subtly reveal their essence.” Morin feels this process allows the essence of the work and of the clay to reveal itself. In his art practice Morin desires to further understand his connection to nature and others.
