cultural appropriation: what commercial galleries need to know
Monday, april 8 via zoom

Bailey Monsebroten, Curator of Indigenous Cultural Heritage at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, uses a number of personal anecdotes and media examples to delve into the intricate dynamics of cultural appropriation, and to emphasize engaging with marginalized communities directly and respectfully. She highlights the ethical concerns surrounding the appropriation of cultural art from communities one does not belong to, and explains the exploitative nature of profiting from cultural knowledge without equitable benefits for the originating communities.

decolonizing methods for commercial galleries
Tuesday, february 20, via zoom

When working with Indigenous artists, commercial galleries have much to take into consideration. This workshop will serve as the starting point for galleries to begin thinking about the various aspects of ensuring respectful and reciprocal relationships with Indigenous artists. We will discuss why inclusion is important, how to better be aware of cultural protocols to strengthen your overall ethical foundation when working with Indigenous art, the importance of representing the underrepresented, and how to begin the reconciliation process by understanding the relevance of breaking down the long term structural barriers in art galleries.

Land acknowledgement : an expression of respect, relationship, & connection
Thursday, February 15, via Zoom

As we all engage in the process of reconciliation, we will begin with Land Acknowledgement. Members will take the time and care to thoughtfully prepare an in-depth acknowledgement and become aware of its significance and impact. Lyndon Linklater, Knowledge Keeper, will shed light on this aspect of reconciliation and help each member craft their own Land Acknowledgement, so that it is an expression of your respect, relationship, and connection to the land we share.

In response to member request, SaskGalleries is proud to present a new session for members, The Digital Journey of An Art Buyer: Online Tools to Create Raving Fans for Your Gallery, presented by Barb McGrath from Above the Fold (@abovethefoldca). Finally, an answer to the age-old question: what is more important, social media or Google?

At this complimentary session, members can expect to cover social media, google marketing, and other digital tools, as well as receive a takeaway workbook to help your gallery on your digital journey. Learn how to leverage the power of social media and Google to increase awareness of your gallery and your work, without dancing on TikTok or being a slave to your phone. Understand how the algorithms work and let it help you find new, raving fans. Go 'under the hood’ on social media and Google to better understand how to use each tool for awareness and growth for your gallery.

The Art of Selling Art Online

Grant Writing and Creative Saskatchewan Grants for Galleries

The first half of this session, with special guest presenter Wendy Plandowski, will discuss tips and tricks for general grant writing and how to make your grant stand above the rest. Creative Saskatchewan will follow and discuss their grants available to commercial galleries, sample projects, and what is important to consider and include in your applications.

Presented by the Craft Alliance Atlantic, this session will focus on export logistics, issues and challenges for Commercial Galleries when shipping outside of Canada. The session includes information and discussion on the definitions of what constitutes Art Works, for the purposes of exporting.

  • Formal vs. Informal customs entries,

  • Temporary importations, restrictions,

  • working with art fairs, exhibitions,

  • implications for e- commerce sales, and

  • working with customs brokers and freight forwarding companies.

Tourism Saskatchewan Funding Opportunities

  • Tourism Professional Development Bursary
    Saskatchewan Tourism Education Council Department will pay for applicable fees, up to $500 per participant, to cover the actual cost of emerit Professional or Specialist Certification and related training resources or tuition for tourism Apprenticeship Trades. Up to $5,000 is available for all approved bursaries each year.

Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant

The Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant is an employer-driven program that:

  • Helps businesses and non-profit organizations train new or existing employees for available jobs; and

  • Provides more opportunities for unemployed and underemployed workers to receive training.
    Through the program, the employer contributes one-third of the training cost, while the federal and provincial governments contribute the remaining two-thirds.
